Why Can't I Sign This Document?
If the Sign button is missing, locked, or you're unable to complete the signing process, here are the most common reasons and how to resolve them.
Sign Button Is Missing
The Sign button won't appear if:
- Signers haven't been configured on the document — the document owner needs to add signers before anyone can sign
- You aren't designated as a signer — contact the person who sent you the document to confirm you've been added
Sign Button Is Locked or Disabled
Hover over the locked Sign button to see the reason. You can also check the Progress Card on the left side of the document to see all required steps and what's still pending.
Common messages:
"Fill required fields to enable signing"
- You have required fields (name, date, etc.) assigned to you that must be completed before you can sign
- You only need to complete your assigned fields — other signers' incomplete fields won't block you
"Complete approvals to enable signing"
- The document has an internal approval process that must finish before signing can begin
- If you're an external signer, this means the company that sent you the document hasn't completed their internal review yet — reach out to them to check on the status
- External guests may see: "The document creator has not allowed signature yet"
"All tracked changes must be resolved before signing can begin"
- There are unresolved edits or tracked changes in the document
- The document owner needs to accept or reject all changes before signing can start
Your Role Doesn't Have Signing Permissions
- Viewers cannot sign documents. If you're listed as a Viewer in the Concord account, you need either a paid seat with signing permissions or to be removed as an internal user and re-added as an external guest.
- Custom roles may not include signing permissions. Your Administrator can enable signing by going to Settings > Users & Roles and turning on "Unsigned documents - Sign" for your role.
Old Account or Free Trial Is Blocking Access
If you previously created a Concord account or started a free trial, your old account may interfere when you try to sign as an external party.
Solution: Open the signing link in an incognito or private browser window. This bypasses the old account and lets you access the document directly.
None of the Above?
If the Sign button is still not working after checking all the above, this may be a technical issue that requires investigation.
